I also decided to upload the unsigned zip in case someone wants to edit the zip and sign it I took another look at some more recent flashable zips and changed some stuff again. Still I'd rather have someone who knows how those zips work take a look at it before someone tries it, because I don't have any experience In fact it should of course be reversible because the only thing it's supposed to do is copy the 2 files and fix the permissions of them. It's possible that it won't even flash because I might have done something wrong. Thank Google for deciding to implement colour emoji (and releasing their tools for creating those fonts too!) in KitKat, because they essentially did all the work. Update: I've updated this for the iOS 9.1/unicorn emoji. If anyone wishes to create a flashable zip for this, please do so. The font size and kerning (all the emojis are the same size!) doesn't seem all that great, but someone who knows fonts better can fix that using ttx. Just adjust the platEncID/platformID in the cmap of AppleColorEmoji.ttf. Later versions of Android support sbix out of the box. This is unlikely to work on versions of Android pre-KitKat, unless support for CBDT/CBLC tables in font files is present (or backported from KitKat). Took the resulting TTF file and threw it into /system/fonts/, modifying /system/etc/fallback_fonts.xml accordinglyĪnd it works.Used this code by Google to add the extracted PNGs into the empty TTF file in CBDT/CBLC (the OpenType extension Google created) tables.Used fonttools (ttx) to create an empty TTF file based on the original Apple Color Emoji.ttf and this template by Google.Used code available here to extract the PNG files from the TTF file's SBIX table.Asked someone (jakew02 on #cyanogenmod-dev) to help me grab Apple Color Emoji.ttf off an OS X 10.9 system. They work the same way KitKat's colour emojis work. I'm sure there was probably something else I could/should have done but this worked. ln -s /data/fonts/AppleColorEmoji.ttf /system/fonts/AppleColorEmoji.ttf chmod root:root and chown 644 /data/fonts/AppleColorEmoji.ttfĦ. Place AppleColorEmoji ttf someplace where there is room (I created /data/fonts)ģ. I set root:root as owner and 644 for perms and it FINALLY (after 3 days) worked.Ģ. What I ended up doing to get this to work is to place the emoji ttf in a new directory /data/fonts and creating a softlink to it from /system/fonts. maybe this is lack of experience) I do find it strange that /system is full. Typing df from adb console reported 16k free on /system so there appeared to really be no space (again. I literally tried everything here and on the web and I couldn't get past "no space left on device" I even tried aroma file manager and console from recovery and couldn't get anything to copy into /system (or /system/fonts) My phone is rooted and running cm11 - 4.4.4 kitkat. I don't know if it is my model phone (SGH-I577 - Samsung Exhilarate) or my lack of experience with android, but I had to get creative. I thought I would relay my experience in case anyone else runs into the same issue.
